Watching /Reading/Listening
Tim Goodman writes about television, and I generally enjoy what he has to say, although I don't necessarily agree with him all the time. Anyway, he had a recent blog post about why all the good television shows are sucking this year. My favorite part of the whole thing was one of the comments, in which the writer claimed that CSI was finally in the process of jumping the shark. Yes, it seems the show is not the brilliant, cutting edge, witty, relationship-driven noir drama it has been since its inception, now that Gus likes Sara. Oh, my heavens, no.
Anyway, here's some other stuff:
I've been re-reading a bunch of stuff by the great George Pelecanos recently- Nick's Trip, Hard Revolution, Drama City, some other stuff. Good stuff- a very specific picture of a time and place, as the background for some great relationships and action. Everybody is flawed, but some people are trying to be just a little bettter, and sometimes they are succeeding a little. Pelecanos also writes for the best show on television.
Woody Allen is right in the center of my comedy pantheon. I can still remember watching Take the Money and Run with my dad as a kid, staying up too late, and realizing that both of us were laughing at some of the same jokes. And the stand-up album is a classic. One of my favorites of all time- I find it very difficult to listen to stand-up at this point, it's mostly either boring or irritating, so his really stands out to me. However, even a genius can't be a genius all the time. But the other stuff is so good that I didn't care that I wasted a couple hours last night watching the remarkably terrible Scoop. Scarlet Johansson is beautiful, but she doesn't do silly, nerdy characters well. I guess she didn't spend enough time doing sketch and improv to get really good at things like timing and playing it real. Hugh Jackman was great as Wolverine, but in this? Boring. Ian McShane, who in my mind is like Woody in that his portrayal of Al Swearengen has bought him as many fuck-ups as he wants forever, seemed like he couldn't relly believe he was doing this. And Woody was a little tired. It seemed like even some of the jokes, which you ouwld think would be themost well-crafted things in the script because they are so clearly dropped in for no reason other than to be jokes, were totally half-assed. Booo, I say. Also, Scarlet, if you're googling yourself and you find this, let's hang out.
And finally, if you wish to see the nadir, the absolute nadir of creativity, originality, enjoyabilityness, and anything else in the slightest bit redeeming (yes, I am at a lost for word), go fry the fuck out of your eyeballs with this nauseating, repulsive, grim, odious, vile piece of shit. Just so you don't have to waste your time investigating on that website, I will give you a brief summary of the cast list and episode guide.
Cast list: If I am in the cast list of this show, I might not be too bright, and at times I probaby wear an unusual hat.
Episode guide: In this episode, the cast found a paltry excuse to take their clothes off and then made witty double entendres worthy of Oscar Wilde, stuff like (but not necessarily including) "Why are you holding your balls so tightly?" and "Would you say that your favorite taco is fish?" and "Look yonder, his vessel skims across the wine-dark sea like a gadfly petrel, and soon must return to feed again upon the bountiful schools of mackerel and flounder."
Hopefully you know more now than you did before.

This is cool.
Here's my cousin and his wife covering a Built to Spill song.
